Plastic recycling industry faces a critical challenge in efficient waste sorting, with over 80% of facilities still relying on manual processes, particularly among SMEs.
While automated solutions exist, their high costs and complexity create significant barriers for widespread adoption. CLARA addresses this challenge by developing an accessible intelligent vision system that democratizes automated plastic sorting technology.
Building upon Rovimática’s AI vision systems experience and insights from the H2020 Research and Innovation Action (RIA) MERLIN (GA-101003883), CLARA combines advanced AI monitoring with user-friendly operation. The system employs vision transformers and depth sensing to achieve robust classification of plastic types, maintaining an interface for non-technical workers. The project innovation focuses on three key aspects: affordability (high-cost reduction compared to current solutions), simplicity (easy programming), and adaptability (self-learning capabilities).
The solution targets the European SME recycling sector, estimated at €350 million, where less than 15% of companies employ automated sorting. CLARA aims to offer a system that increases sorting accuracy while processing a large number of items per hour.
Our 12-month project encompasses three phases: advanced vision system development, integration and validation, and market preparation. The development builds upon TRL6 achievements, advancing to TRL8 through comprehensive system optimization, multi-site production validation and industrial certification.
CLARA represents a significant step toward efficient plastic recycling, enabling SMEs to implement automated sorting without substantial expertise or financial burden. This technology will contribute to increased recycling rates and improved resource efficiency across Europe’s circular economy.
